I'm such a Sam Payne junkie I get jealous when somebody talks about a Sam song I haven't heard yet! What is "I Hear Quiet Voice", and can get to hear and own it? How about a downloadable "Favela"?

Sam

February 1, 2010

Sadie! Such a pleasure to be with you guys last night, and a real thrill to have such a terrific choir sing the song. You turned up the awesome! Glad to be a part of what you're doing. Thanks.

Hey Sam I just wanted to say thank you for writing the song i hear a quiet voice. I was one of the youth who had the chance to sing it at the fireside. It's such a beautiful song!! Thanks for letting us sing your wonderful music!

Hey Elder Payne! Here's a blast from the past: the Argentina Mendoza Mission (La M.A.M.), the MTC, and the mission office. Sam, you haven't changed a bit! Well, except for being married and having 4 sons, and all. May God bless the goodness of your lives! --John

I went to the Tuachan Christmas Concert to see my nephew sing with the Vocal Point group from BYU. I was awed by them, but then also discovered your amazing talent. I loved the song about 'Archibald Gardner' who happens to be my neighbor's gg grandfather. I can't wait to tell him. Thank you for a wonderful show. You have a new fan.

Rich, you're too kind. I appreciate the kind words very much--though from what I can see, SUSWA is in better hands right now than it's ever been! Look forward to seeing you on our next visit to Southern Utah.

To anyone and everyone who will go or has already been to one of your concerts:
Sam Payne is truly a "master storyteller" and the pictures he paints with lyric are like that of Picasso with oils and a brush; authentic, colorful, and always containing imagery that will exercise the mind and heart. When he teams up with journeymen musicians Steve Lemmon,
Ryan Tilby, and Steve Flaig the result is genius. Sam started this thing called the "Southern Utah Songwriters Association" years ago in St. George and as long as I follow as one of his successors, I will do what is necessary to maintain the standards he has set.
Thanks for coming back and entertaining the folks of southern Utah at Ancestor Square on April 30, 2009. You are a Utah son and a treasure. The website looks terrific and I wish you all the best.

Hey Jason,

Thanks for posting the link. The guestbook doesn't read links automatically, so I'll post the same link on the "News" page so people can read it if they like. Nice comments from Angie! Thanks for letting me know about them!

April 15, 2009

Hey Sam, I enjoyed your performance with Russ Dixon on "Good Things Utah." Did you know that Angie Larsen mentioned you guys in the show's blog? Here's the link to her comments. Again, guys, good job. Thrilled that the show went so well.

We didn't know what to expect from the Paul Cardall benefit on Monday night. Boy, were we blown away. What an evening. We were amazed at the world-class show we got, and for the outpouring of support for Paul. So memorable. Many thanks to you and the rest of the guys.

Hey Megan! We haven't been asked yet to play the Brigham Young Park series this year. But if we do, I'll be sure to let you know. Its been good to see your family at that show over the years!

Do you know if you're doing your usual summer concert at the Brigham Young Memorial Park again this summer?

March 20, 2009

Hey friends! The guestbook here at sampayne.com was getting spammed like crazy, so I turned it off. Most frustrating, since I love hearing from y'all. But this new little captcha tool ought to help. I hope it's not too inconvenient for you. It's facilitated putting the guestbook back online, which I'm very excited about.

Cheers!

How cool are you? I am so happy to see your success. I hope you remember me. I remember you from as far back as Mrs. Reagan 2nd grade class in Alpine.

July 6, 2008

Careful how you say that! We may just come and camp in the park and never leave! We really had a great time with you. Thanks for being so gracious.

LOVE the new cd Father to Son, Sam! You have such soulful talent.

Mary Ann Maxwell Hebbert

June 29, 2008

Reading Ann's comments brought back a ton of memories! We are alive and well in PA. What fun that technology allows such gatherings! If either of you are in the neighborhood we're close to lots of historical sites and we love having company spend a few days camping on our floors :)

June 26, 2008

Imagine my delight to see my favorite childhood babysitter and my favorite auntie both checking in here! It's terribly cool hearing from you both!

Ann Pappas Jones

June 25, 2008

Hey Sam,

I love the new look of your website (maybe not so new, but it's been a while since I've checked in). I mostly had to comment because I saw Mary Ann Maxwell's name!!! Blast from the past. Childhood memories of visiting with your family and hanging out with Mary Ann. She had the best trampoline! We used to spend hours talking religion, and sharing a babysitting love of you kids! Was it her dog that bit off your face when you were a wee tyke? Ahh, the strange things your ole' Auntie remembers. Well, greetings to Mary Ann if she checks in again, and thanks to you, Sam, for creating a great gathering place, better than the local coffee shop!

Love to the boys and Kris! -annie

I'm sitting w/ an elderly woman this week for some friends so they could get away alone....I'm listening to Fly Ball and crying...wow, I must be getting old if I listened to your dad when I teenager(still do), babysat you (no longer do that) and now my children are listening to you (as well as their mother ((listeing to their mother and their mother is also listening to you))). I was reading through some of your blogs, looking for the lyrics to Fly Ball and read that your favorite book is My Name Is Asher Lev. That is my all time favorite book and I search the world for others who have read it because I know we are kindred spirits.

Keep up the amazing work, Sam! We love your music. I expect my children's children will be listening to your children performing some day...it would be appra-po.

Sam, I was just reading our stake bulletin and saw you will be in DC tomorrow night. I only live 40 minutes away but won't be able to make it. Looks like life is treating you well. It's fun to see a familar name and face while living so far from home. Good luck with everything,

June 12, 2008

Hey Melissa! Nice to hear from you. You bet we're doing the Brigham Park series this year. Coming right up, in fact! June 27. My love to your whole gang.

P.S. I'm glad you got to see my mom. I'm pretty proud of her. For those of you paying attention, my mother went back to school in her fifties, and recently finished her graduate work as an architect at the University of Utah. Rock and roll, Mom!

June 11, 2008

Hey, I hope you had a great birthday! I know it's late, but I did think of y ou on your birthday.
Hey, I also saw your mother at her Architechture display before she graduated. It was cool to see her and her project was really good.
Are you doing the Brigham Young Park Concert Series this year? My friend called me tonight and said her dd got tickets to your concert at Sandy Amphitheater on Sept 5th. So she was asking me about you.
I hope to see you this Summer.

Hey Jennilyn!
Happy Mother's Day! You may not have to wait too...hmm. Maybe no more info for now, but watch this space! In the meantime, "Father to Son" (recorded for a live audience) hits the street sometime this month, with "Autumn Leaves" as the closer.

Jennilyn Tillotson

May 11, 2008

Dear Sam,
It's Mother's Day, so I'm indulging here spending a few minutes to write one of my music wishes! Please tell Kris I hope she has/had a Happy Mother's Day! Your "Route 66" on Bow Me Down is such a fun trip! And I'm on the rescue adventure with you every time in "The Big TIme". Back when you were in Lars Yorgansen's WSU jazz group, I enjoyed your performances the most. You're a scat wizard! I'm hoping my words are another voice urging you in doing an all-jazz album - ok, a mostly jazz record would be fine. I don't care how many songs are originals and how many are the standards made your own. Just do me some more jazz, will ya, Sam?
Thanks! Jennilyn

March 16, 2008

I was Jennifer Harris in high school, class of '87, in choir with you, Sam. it's too cool to see how you've turned out - kind of the way we all dreamed we would, but you made it work!

"The Princess Bride" was a strong influence on many of our formative years. i love that you cite that.

I was one of Sam Payne's first seminary students at Clearfield High in Utah. He was the best and really changed my desire for learning the gospel. The first day in class I remembering him jumping up on the desk and singing a song I thought oh great this is going to be fun. But it turned out to be the best semester in semenary I ever had. I loved the days he would sing for us. Thanks Bro. Payne I will never forget the lessons you taught me.

Cheri

January 25, 2008

So, I'm online on one of those LDS singles websites checking out the guys and I see a picture of a guy who looks interesting so I start reading through his profile. In the "fun facts" section it asks for favorite bands or artists and right there is your name! Sam Payne! It's so cool! You're getting to be famous, Sam!

Rick Klemm

January 23, 2008

Sam, I am glad I have this opportunity to say thanks for the time you spent at Paul and Jill Burgons home earlier this month playing and singing for us. I felt the spirit there. Hi Sam!
I came across your name while looking at upcoming 2008 Tuachan performances with my teenage daughter. I am so happy that you are so successful with your music! I had to tell my daughter all about how a bunch of my Brighton girlfriends hung out with some great AF guys. Fun memories. Best wishes with your continued success!

Hey Brother Payne,
How have you been?! I hear your getting another CD out. Sweet!! Can't wait to hear it?!

November 25, 2007

The new EP sounds great. Thanks for posting the two songs. I still get requests for another Sam Payne house concert here in Cali. News songs = New concert. All the Central California Fans (and soon to be fans) are getting restless... come on back out here.

Dave "sampaynefan" since 2002

November 25, 2007

First saw you perform at the First Night celebration in St. George in 2002 and am now a "sampaynefan" for life! As Glenn Beck says "holy cow!", music has a new superstar for me now. I am one of those old timers that went to BYU when your dad was there...loved listening to James Taylor, Bob Dylan, John Denver, JD Souther, Don McLean, Dan Fogleberg, etc. How one person can have characteristics of all these great performers,(with a dash of jazz and scat..alla Danny Kaye), is absolutely remarkable!! Just bought your latest CD and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of more musical inspiration from you.

November 21, 2007

Somedays, I just come to your site and listen to your music and it lifts me. Thanks.

November 21, 2007

We were at the recording session last night. What a wonderful way to spend an evening. We had such a lovely time I decided to look you up on line- and look what I find! And another Christmas gift purchased (I bought the 8 CDs for my family) I just purchased tickets to 'The Gift'. It will be an early gift- but will set a lovely theme for the rest of the season. Do you post the lyrics to your songs? Thanks again for a great evening. The album will be fabulous. I cannot wait to hear it.

Cheri Lott

November 20, 2007

Hi again, Sam. Just got home from your live concert. What an enjoyable evening! So glad I was able to attend! I can't WAIT for this album to come out! I had no idea you had so many new tunes ready. One I had never heard before brought tears to my eyes. "Fly Ball" brought some tender feelings to the surface just a little bit. There just was no one else in my life quite like Grandma Lott. And remembering her and envisioning her meeting with Grandpa just sort of hit me. Thanks for that song.

Hillary Barlow Griffen

November 18, 2007

Hi Sam! I'm so glad I stumbled across you! I always knew you would end up in music. In case you don't remember me, we had Acapella and Seminary together. We just moved to Lausanne Switzerland and my teenage son was doing an online search of LDS artists and we stumbled onto you. At times like this the world seems incredible small. Congratulations!

October 30, 2007

Hey Jordan,

I'm glad you enjoyed the Skyline concert. We (Pete, Ryan, and I) will, I think, look on that show with a lot of fond memories. It was a great night. The Dylan tune we did together is called "Girl From the North Country," and appears on both "Nashville Skyline" (as a duet with Johnny Cash that some people herald as a great cut, but that I don't like much), and on "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," as a terrific cut from one of my all-time favorite records.

The steel-mill song is actually called "Cleaner," and I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's not on the EP (advertised on the website now), but we're going into the studio late in November to record a full-length album (the EP only has eight tracks--long for an EP maybe, but short for an album), and it's slated for recording as a part of those November sessions.

The EP was created by a Salt Lake record label called Sounds of Zion, as an effort to collect into one place the handful of songs that I do with them in concert. They produce a big multi-artist inspirational show called "an evening of music and inspiration." I've written some stuff to be performed in those shows. As such, the EP is more overtly inspirational in nature than the other albums. It was produced an engineered by Ryan Tilby (the same Ryan Tilby who played with us as Skyline), and turned out nicely.

Thanks again for your email. I'm runnin' with Sam's compliment. How can you beat "really cool"?

-Sam

Jordan

October 26, 2007

Sam,
We truly enjoyed the "Save the Arts, Share the Music" concert at Skyline last week. I was wondering what the name of the Bob Dylan tune you and Peter sang was and where I might be able to find it? Also what is the name of the song you wrote about the steel mill? My son has been calling it "Work this Machine." Will that be on the new album? The whole concert was excellent. Thanks also for saying hello to my sons afterwards, in the words of my son Sam it was "really cool." Keep up the great music, we are looking forward to the new album.

Grace

October 23, 2007

haha, NUH UH! His name is NOT Ryan...ok i guess you would know his name better than me...wow, that's embarassing. Sorry, well nevermind then, i shouldn't be talking. Oh ok, yeah i thought it was mean how they gave you all these cool certificates and then it's like, "ok, nothing for you.." but thanks for setting that straight. Some of my friends i was sitting with were still mad even 2-3 days after you guys performed. :D! Well anyways, I really enjoyed listening to you play, you were great and I will keep my eye out for new albums!! :D!

Nathan Wright

October 22, 2007

OK,Sam, I found your webpage online, and now more than ever I am anxious to hear your music/see you perform - recorded, live, whatever. I've got to come back and read more from your thoughts page. Why didn't you tell me you were Marvin Payne's son? See you on Sundays! Nathan

Sam

October 22, 2007

Hey Grace! Thanks for your post to the website. I had a great time at Skyline, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect, and the audience was terrific. As far as my back-up guy was concerned, I don't think the concert organizers (who were awesome, by the way) knew he was coming until we got there. They were very gracious to him backstage (Ryan is his name. You called him Nick, which is interesting because he has a
brother-in-law named Nick who used to be our drummer). We had a good laugh on the way home--him with nothing but a soda in his hand, and me with plaques and gift certificates and balloons and thank-you cards and such. I gave some balloons to Ryan's son, Weston, and Ryan and I decided to split the gift certificate and take our wives out to dinner :)

Thanks again for the note.

Grace

October 21, 2007

I saw you at the Skyline Save the Arts Benefit and I thought you were great! I never thought that I could like another genre other than rap! :)! Your lyrics have such unique insight. I love your songs. -Oh and I hope your back-up Nick was pissed for the committee not thanking him. I was. He was great too!:)

Cristina

October 17, 2007

I just found you. WOW! Sunflower is just a beautiful song. I love it. It really touches me. I am going to buy your songs for my ipod.

Sam

October 17, 2007

Jake, gosh, thanks for your post. I don't know exactly what to say, except that I'm very, very thankful that we could be part of a comforting memory that night. Some blessings, I guess, we can't anticipate or prepare for. Thanks again for coming to the show, and for sharing this.

Jake Thomas

October 14, 2007

I was able to catch your show at the Harvest Moon festival in Spanish Fork. I really enjoyed it even if it was cold outside. My Dad was a singer and would perform at venues like that. He passed away unexpectedly a few months ago and to hear you play reminded me so much of him that I had to tell you thank you.
